Must Read - Women's tennis icon Maria Sharapova announces she failed a doping test at the Australian Open

Sharapova may not be a cheater. But she cheated, unwittingly or not. She takes full responsibility for it, which of course doesn't change the process.

What's more shocking is that while she has always paid to every detail of her career – one of the reasons she has been so very successful – she took her eye off the ball on this one. Big time. And it's going to cost her a whole lot.

“I thought it was very important for me to come out and speak about this in front of all of you, because throughout my long career, I have been very open and honest about many things,” she said. “I made a huge mistake, and I’ve let my fans down. I’ve let this sport down that I have been playing since the age of 4 and that I love so deeply.”

Must Read - Oh, She’s Busted!

“The first six words Sharapova spoke appeared to be beautifully chosen. “I wanted to let you know…” Personal. Thoughtful. Not “I have been forced to…” or “You would have found out anyway”, but an act of choice, an almost moral decision to keep us informed.”

But Maria has been busted and no lawyer should be able to defend her to a reduced sentence. As the article states: “A 2015 study revealed that 724 of 4,316 Russian athletes tested were found to have meldonium in their system.

Must Read - Kristina Mladenovic says Maria Sharapova is seen as ‘cheater’ on Tour

“All the other players are saying she’s a cheater,” she said. “You sure doubt and think that she didn’t deserve all she won until now. That’s dreadful, but it’s good that it’s finally out. As far as I am concerned if I take an aspirin I worry 10 times about what I do. She’s been taking this drug for 10 years and it’s a serious drug. She has played with the rules and thought, if it’s not banned, then I can take it. For me that’s very disappointing. I don’t like the mentality to be the best by playing with the rules.

“She can play with words and find a good lawyer but on the principles of the situation, she’s wrong,” Mladenovic told the French newspaper Le Parisien. “She has no excuse that can defend what she’s done. For me there’s no doubt.

Must Read - Rafael Nadal Threatens Lawsuit Over Renewed Doping Allegations

Discussing Sharapova’s announcement on the French show “Le Grand 8” last week, the former French minister of health and sport Roselyne Bachelot accused Rafael Nadal.

“They just don’t reveal positive tests or the sanctions given in tennis,” Bachelot said in French. “But curiously, you will learn that a tennis player had an injury that keeps him or her off the courts for months, like the famous injury of Rafael Nadal that kept him off the court for seven months — it’s very certainly due to a positive test.”

Must Read - Unequal Say

For all of its progressive thinking on behalf of its own players, the ATP didn’t have much use for women’s tennis. Here’s what Billie Jean King wrote in her autobiography about her attempt to join forces with the men during their boycott of Wimbledon in 1973:

"At this time," she wrote, "I was leading the movement to create the Women’s Tennis Association just as Ashe and several other men had spearheaded the Association of Tennis Professionals the September before.

"Never mind that the so-called Association of Tennis Professionals would not admit female tennis professionals; I went to Arthur and the other leaders of the ATP, and I told them, ‘Look, we want to support you in this fight, so let’s work together and if you do boycott Wimbledon, we’re very likely to walk out with you.’

“Now get the picture: the men have a dispute, and we are offering, free and clear, no strings attached, to stick our necks out and support them ... So it was utterly in the men’s self-interest to accept our assistance. And did they? They wouldn’t even respond. I was never able so much as to get the ATP leaders to sit down and explore matters.”
